About the foundation
The idea of the Foundation was born during long discussions about Polish industry, design (now it is said "design") and products.
We realized that although many products are made in Poland, few of them were invented and designed in our country. Poland is one of the largest producers of cars in Europe - so what if virtually all of them were designed abroad - they are only manufactured in our country. The same goes for the manufacture of airplanes, refrigerators, televisions and many, many other items.
Poland has one of the lowest ratios of research and development (R&D) spending in the European Union. Both per capita and as a percentage of GDP. Our economy is not innovative - it has become reproductive.
But what is happening to young creators and engineers? Supposedly we are so creative? Where are the ideas? Is it easy now to break through with a new, innovative idea? How can Polish engineers and designers be helped to get them out into wider waters?
And most importantly - promotion of a country is most effective through products identified with it. The more innovative, advanced, pretty or useful, the stronger the association with the country. Ikea, Lego, Nokia, Mercedes, Sony - these are key words that describe not only the company, but also the countries from which they come.
This is how the idea of creating the Foundation was born - an institution that will help promote Polish technical thought and bring Polish projects to life. We want to show both in Poland and abroad that products with the inscription "Made in Poland" are of the highest quality and we can be proud of them.
We also want to support Polish engineers, technicians, ergonomics and industrial design specialists and help them implement their ideas and concepts into production.
As a patron, we chose a Polish industrialist who built world-class measuring devices and gauges in his factory. He was the Wokulski of his time. You can read more about him in the "Our Patron" section.
This is how the G. Gerlach Foundation for the Development of Polish Technical Thought and Precision Mechanics was established.
